Qualifications

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are nationally recognised qualifications which demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed to do a job. NVQs are work related, competence based qualifications that enable employees to build and develop their skills to meet your business needs.

An NVQ is comprised of two elements:
  • Underpinning knowledge and skills - provided by flexible online courses to fill knowledge gaps.
  • Practical work-based competence assessment - job related tasks that develop the practical skills needed to fulfil a job role effectively.
Who are NVQs suitable for?

No previous qualifications are required to undertake an NVQ and are available for all ages, and at any career stage.

How long does it take to complete an NVQ?

How are NVQs assessed?

NVQs are comprised of several units, each made up of national occupational standards that cover all the main aspects of a job. The assessment of competence is carried out in the workplace and the work the employee is doing will generate the evidence for assessment, reducing the disruption to normal work.
As the skills are assessed through work-based evidence, there are no 'end of unit' tests or exams. Certification is based purely on evidence of skills.
A learndirect assessor will monitor the progress of the employee and assess them in the work place to ensure training is put into practice effectively, and they have the evidence they need to get the qualification. A verifier will then check this and award the NVQ.
